Lake Bogoria National Reserve

Lake Bogoria is found in Lake Bogoria National Reserve Kenya North of Nakuru, the lake is the heart of an arid landscape, in the shadow of the dramatic walls of the Siracho Range. Until recently this lake was known as Lake Hannington. Lake Bogoria has no outlet and the intense evaporation has led to high levels of salt and minerals.

The soda lake is shallow and is volcanically active, the Western shore is lined with spouting geysers and hot springs, spurting steam and bubbling geothermal pools.Fresh water springs at the lake edge attract an abundance of birds and wildlife.

Like other Kenyan Rift Valley soda lakes such as Lake Nakuru, Lake Elementeita, and Lake Magadi, Lake Bogoria has no fish but is rich in blue-green algae, as a result it attracts one of the largest populations of lesser flamingos. Famous for its geysers and hot springs, the sulphur waters gushing out of the ground is known to have therapeutic values, hence are natural spas and steam baths.

Lake Bogoria has been a National Reserve since 1973 and was designated a Ramsar site in 2001. This means it is an internationally important wetland area, supporting many regionally and nationally endangered species, including the migratory lesser flamingo, the greater flamingo and the black-necked grebe. Up to two million birds can be found there at any one time, many living in the reserve for months at a time.

Highlights of Lake Bogoria National Reserve

  • A soda lake in the great East Africa Rift Valley
  • It is the home of Africa’s most magnificent antelope, The Greater Kudu and a host of other savannah wildlife such as zebra, impala, Grants Gazelle, Klipspringer, Buffalo, Dik-diks, Patas Monkey among others.
  • Predators include Leopard, Cheetah, hyenas, mongoose, jackal, and occasionally sightings of Karakul Cat.

Adventure and Pleasure at the Lake Bogoria National Reserve

  • The geysers and hot springs that feed the Lake Bogoria begin from the Sandai and Emsos rivers.
  • In addition to these inflows there are about 200 alkaline hot springs onshore at Loburu, Chemurkeu, and a southern group Ng'wasis, Koibobei and Losaramat while other springs release straight from the lake floor.
  • Lake Bogoria contains the highest concentration of true geysers in Africa.
  • The Loburu hot springs erupt along the lakeside and are a captivating but also they are dangerous. Due to the extreme temperatures of these boiling springs you need to be careful especially when near them.
