Aberdare National Park

The Aberdare National Park is home to the Aberdare Mountain whose V shaped valleys are covered by lush vegetation. Streams and rivers cascades over spectacular waterfalls, including Kenya's longest drop of approximately 1,000 feet. The Aberdare Ranges are one of the homes of ‘Ngai’ the God of the Kikuyu people.

The Aberdare forest is home to a multitude of elephant, buffalo, giant forest hog, the endangered black rhino and the eland, found higher up in the moorland. The Aberdares is an isolated volanic range that forms the eastern wall of the Kenya Rift Valley.

The Aberdares are an excellent area for spotting the elusive leopard and occasional sightings have been made of the Golden cat. Black and white Columbus monkeys and Sykes monkeys are easily seen swinging acrobatically from one tree branch to the next, as are waterbuck, bushbuck, reedbuck, duikers, and serval cats. Melanistic cats appear to be quite common in the high altitudes of the Aberdares while the black serval cats are also often spotted.

Bird watching in the park is rewarding too with species including Jackson’s francolin, parry hawk goshawk, eagle sunbird and plover. For keen anglers, there is an excellent fishing in the many cool mountain streams that flow through Aberdare forest with clear, tumbling streams and shaded river bends.
