The Mathews or Mathews Range are also known as the Lenkiyio Hills.The range of mountains are characterized by several mountain peaks and are found in the Laikipia District of the Rift Valley in northern Kenya. The Mathews is one of the most impressive geographical features in the country, the green tropical forest crop out of the brown arid desert of the Northern Frontier Region. The Mathews ranges is a" biological bonanza' by BBC news is a glorious montane rainforest, rare cycads and a type of fauna to complement its individuality. Mathews Range is one of the ‘hot spots’ for quality leopard viewing in Africa and equally, for close-up sightings of the normally extremely shy lesser kudu antelope. The rare African wild dogs are frequently encountered in the Sarara valley too. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, gerenuk, impala and warthogs are now regularly seen on our game drives and bush walks and are very much on the increase in numbers.
A visit to the famous “Sarara” Singing Wells is a must while you at Namunyak where Samburu warriors bring their cattle to these watering holes on a daily basis during the dry season. The warriors descend into the wells which can be up to 10 meters deep, form a human convey and chant traditional Samburu songs as they pass water up by hand for the cattle. This fascinating ritual goes on for several hours a day.
