Great Rift Valley

The Great Rift Valley is a trench that stretching from the Afar Triple Junction. The Rift Valley enters Kenya from Lake Turkana in the north and has many unique geographical and scenic features, including the Elgeyo escarpment and the Suguta Valley, the extinct volcanoes Mount Longonot and the Menegai Crater and Mount Suswa etc. The East African Rift Valley is also home to a numerous lakes such as the Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru, Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, Lake Magadi and Lake Turkana. Several national parks and game reserve are also found here

As you drive from Nairobi, climbing the escarpment at the top you experience a most magnificent and breathtaking sight of the enormous great rift that stretches for thousands of miles. This stunning scenic landscape of the Rift valley is amazing and waiting for you to ascend,descend, explore and discover the many gems for you to experience, the lakes area of the Rift in Kenya is a must see.

Lake Naivasha is a beautiful a fresh water lake fringed by thick papyrus and characterized by diverse topography and geological scenery. Hell's Gate National Park is also famous for natural hot geysers, eagle and obsidian deposits and extinct volcanoes, Game to view includes hyrax, buffalo, giraffe, land, hartebeest, lion and leopard. Hell's Gate is also an ornithologist's dream. The cliffs of Hell's Gate are the breeding grounds for vultures, Verreaux Eagles, Auger Buzzards and thousands of swifts. Activities on offer includes walk, horse riding, cycle and rock climb within the park. Lake Baringo is also fresh water and mecca for bird watchers with over 460 bird spicies recorded.

Mount Longonot National Park home to a young volcano 2,776 metres created during the massive volcanic eruptions that formed the Rift valley. Longonot has beautiful V-shaped valleys and ridges covered in forest - a haven for a variety of game and birds. The park is perfect for the adventurous offering including activities hiking, rock climbing, and biking as well as the more normal game viewing.

Lake Nakuru National Park was created to protect the vast flocks of the spectacular flocks of lesser flamingo that literally turns the lakeshore pink in colour. As does Lakes Nakuru and Bogoria waters grow rich blue-green algae that seasonally attract thousands of flamingos. Wild animals found here is the hippo, black and white rhino, Rothschild giraffe, buffalo, impala, eland, warthog, Mountain Reedbuck, klipspringers and Black and White Colobus Monkeys and diverse bird life species. The national park is world famous for ornithologists, scientists and wildlife filmmakers.

Another jewel scattered along the floor of the Rift Valley is Lake Bogoria that covers most of the reserve is a spectacular sight that reflects the searing blue skies and the pinky colour the of flamingos. With over 135 bird species recorded here the area has an important ornithological interest. The bushed grasslands surrounding the lake are home to a number of animals and the most notable is the very rare Greater Kudu antelope.

Lake Turkana is the most northerly of the Great Rift Valley lakes and the largest desert lake in the world. Diverse rugged landscapes full of natural wonder, activities, accommodation and wildlife, the Rift Valley is an excellent part of any safari holiday.
