Amboseli a photographer's paradise lies northwest of Mt. Kilimanjaro, on the Kenya border with Tanzania and is amazingly very rich in both flora and fauna. Amboseli is one of Kenya’s most popular conservations area, mainly due to the magnificent backdrop of Africa's highest snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro which dominates the sweeping game dotted plains of the Amboseli Park. The park is certainly one of the finest locations for mountain spotting with the glittering Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru in Tanzania in the horizon.
Waters from melting snow of the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kilimanjaro feed the marshland and swamps below, so that hippos are abundant throughout the year. Amboseli’s main attraction is the vast herds of elephants with the bulls carrying some of the largest tusks in Kenya. Also found in the park are giraffe, cheetah, buffaloes, wildebeest, hyena and and jackal hunt the profolic plain game. Many bird species and a variety of water fowl like the pelican and Egyptian goose.
The Amboseli is probably most famous and a haven for wildlife photography of elephant(s) with Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Amboseli National Park is designated to become an International Bio-sphere reserve and its large herd of elephants makes it world famous with researchers. An International Bio-sphere is a conservation area designated by UNESCO in an attempt to establish a protected area.
The National Park embodies 5 main wildlife habitats (open plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush country, swamps and marshland) and covers part of a pleistocene lake basin, now dry. Within this basin is a temporary lake, Lake Amboseli, which is prone to flooding during heavy rainfall.
